Crete is Greece's largest island, with major cities, mountain ranges, Minoan sites and very long passages between cruising areas.

Use current charts, forecasts and local instructions for every approach.

Exploring Crete by boat

Heraklion, Chania-Souda, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia are major sea gateways; the south coast has fewer all-weather ports.

organized facilities include Agios Nikolaos Marina and other managed basins, while large commercial ports require authority clearance and careful traffic awareness.

Elounda and Mirabello Gulf, Souda Bay's permitted areas, Gramvousa and selected south-coast bays offer very different cruising contexts; protected zones and exposure must be checked.

What to see

Prioritize Knossos, Chania Old Town, the Palace of Phaistos, Samaria Gorge, Spinalonga and mountain villages. Check transport and opening hours before leaving the boat.

Beaches and swimming

The main choices are Elafonisi, Falassarna, Balos, Vai, Preveli and the beaches of the south coast. Match every stop to the day’s wind and swell.

Food & where to eat

Look for dakos, kalitsounia, stamnagathi greens, graviera, olive oil, lamb and Cretan wine. Ask what is local and in season.
